March 9, 1944 to Eberhard Bethge, from Tegel

Charles Halton at Awilum recently noted an online source, Bibelwissenschaft, that provides free access to several German translations of the Bible (including the 1984 revision of Luther and Gute Nachricht) as well as the standard Hebrew, Latin, and Greek texts of the Bible. The texts are searchable for those who register.

Jaeger taught at Berlin until 1936, when he migrated to the U.S. with his Jewish wife. The first volume of Jaeger’s Paideia [...]

to Eberhard Bethge, from Tegel
In this long letter, Bonhoeffers thoughts range from friendship to education and culture, to preparation for suffering and death. Here he meditates about the anguish of Christ in the garden.
Zu Deiner Bemerkung über die “Angst Christi”: Sie wird doch nur im Gebet (wie auch in den Psalmen) ausgesprochen [...]

to Eberhard Bethge, January 23, 1944 (Tegel)
In his unfinished Ethics, Bonhoeffer stated that the commandment of God reaches one in four “Mandates” or areas of life: Marriage, Work, State, Church. In this letter he ponders the place of friendship in this scheme. Friendship is not a mandate but belongs to the realm [...]

Welcome to David and Lia, who recently discovered us. David has a German book he would be willing to part with:
I have a german theological book, entitled something like “Ruhrende Begebenheiten und Merkwurdige Gebetserhorungen” as far as I can tell.
It was published by the Mennonite Publishing Company of Elkhart, Indiana in 1896.
It’s yellowed, but solid [...]

As the song goes, I had to see that the world is round, now I’ve come home to my country girl.
I hope to resume regular posts, maybe tomorrow. If all goes well, I should be averaging three or four German posts per week.
